Do Not Mistake Our Softness for Weakness

2021

Commissioned for the Burchfield Penney Art Center by the Junior League of Buffalo
Powder coated Rigidized® stainless steel

This work was created to honor the Centennial of The Junior League of Buffalo, an all women volunteer organization. One of over 290 Leagues across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and England, The Junior League of Buffalo is committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities. This piece celebrates the contributions of all women across Western New York and demonstrates to women and girls they have unlimited capacity to achieve.

This sculpture speaks to the necessity to rise and claim womanhood for ourselves, in the face of the constrictions placed upon us, in whatever way we see fit. The six revolving elements represent a faceted avatar, evoking the different stations of feminine power, progression, and metamorphosis: From youth to old age, naivety to wisdom, timidity to courage, obedience to defiance, stoicism to exuberance. The work is my ode to our eternal becoming.
